How much accordion shutter does my house need?

List the openings with a rough width and height. You get the linear feet of shutter per opening and for the house, the stack width beside each one, and a list you can print or send with your request.

The openings

Measure the outside of each window or door opening in inches, frame to frame. Rough is fine: the installer measures properly on the visit.

What are the walls?

How this works

Accordion shutters span the width of an opening with hinged vertical blades that run on a top and bottom track, so the amount of shutter is the sum of the opening widths. The height sets the blade length; the tool shows it for each opening so the installer can see the sizes at a glance.

When open, the blades fold into a stack beside the opening. The tool allows roughly a tenth of the width per side so you can see whether a stack would cover a door, a light or a neighbouring window. The installer confirms the real stack width for the product quoted, and measures every opening properly before anything is ordered.

It runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent anywhere. It is a guide, not a quote or a professional assessment — products, openings and walls differ, so follow the maker's instructions where they disagree, and the installer confirms what the job needs when they measure it.

Questions people ask

How are accordion shutters measured?
By the opening: the width sets how many blades span it and the height sets the blade length. Installers usually quote by the linear foot of opening width, with the height deciding which blade size is used. The tool adds up the widths for you.
How much wall do accordion shutters need beside the window?
When open, the blades fold into a stack on one or both sides of the opening. As a rule of thumb the stack takes roughly a tenth of the opening width per side; the installer confirms the stack width for the product quoted.
Do I measure the glass or the whole opening?
The whole opening, outside, frame to frame. The shutter covers the frame, not only the glass. Rough measurements are fine for this tool; the installer measures to the quarter inch on the visit.
Can one accordion shutter cover a very wide opening?
Wide spans are split into sections with a centre post, or covered with a product approved for that span. The installer tells you opening by opening.
Why does the wall type matter?
Concrete block takes masonry anchors; wood frame takes fixings into the framing or blocking. The product's approval lists the anchors for each wall, and the installer uses the ones that match your house.
