Shutter close-up and re-open service

If you are away, cannot manage the shutters yourself or simply would rather someone did it properly, one call lines up a local installer to close and lock every opening, and to open them again when the weather has passed.

What people call about

  • Owners out of town or out of state when a storm is forecast.
  • Homeowners who cannot close heavy or high shutters themselves.
  • Seasonal homes that need closing in May and opening in November.
  • Property managers and landlords with several homes to close.
  • A house with a mix of accordions and panels where the panels need putting up as well.

What happens on the visit

  • Every accordion shutter is run closed, checked that the halves meet, and locked from inside or with the key as arranged.
  • Panel openings are fitted if you have the panels and hardware on site.
  • Anything that will not close or lock is reported to you with a photo so you know which openings are protected.
  • Access is arranged ahead of time: a key, a code or a neighbour, with the shutters locked and the house secured afterwards.
  • After the storm, the shutters are opened and stacked, and any damage is noted for you.

What to have ready

  • Book before a storm is named. Once a watch is issued every installer in the three counties is on close-ups.
  • Have the shutter keys available, and say how the installer gets into the yard and, if needed, the house.
  • List any shutters you already know are stuck or missing locks, so they are repaired first rather than found on the day.

Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach

Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach have a large share of seasonal and second homes, and hurricane season runs June to November. Owners who book a close-up for the season, or arrange it the moment a storm is forecast, get it done; the days after a watch is issued are the hardest to book.

Questions people ask

How far ahead do I need to book a close-up?
As early as you can. Many owners arrange it at the start of the season for the whole season. Once a storm is named, installers are booked solid, so a request sent that week may not be reachable in time.
Does the installer need to get inside the house?
Most accordion shutters close and lock from outside, but some lock only from inside, and sliding-door shutters are often locked from inside. The installer tells you which, and access is arranged in advance.
Can the same person reopen the shutters after the storm?
Yes. Reopening is booked at the same time, and is done once the weather has cleared and the roads are passable.
What if a shutter won't close on the day?
You are told straight away, with a photo. If it can be repaired on the spot it is; if not, you know which opening is unprotected and can decide what to do.
Will the installer put up my metal panels too?
If the panels, bolts and wing nuts are on site and the tracks or anchors are in place, yes. Say so when you send the request so the right time is allowed.
Do you offer this for condos?
Yes, for the shutters on your unit, subject to the building's access rules. Tell the installer how to reach the balcony and any windows that face a common walkway.
